6-Lane Indoor Swimming Pool - FAQs

Other department specific FAQs can be found on relevant pages throughout our website

What is the pool water temperature and why?

The pool temperature is maintained at about 84 degrees. This allows for comfort by the greatest number of people. If the temperature is too low, it would be hard for little children to swim, if it is too hot, it would be harder for those who swim athletically to enjoy their swim. As each person’s preference can differ, this allows for a middle ground.

When you sign up and pay for a pool class, you are always guaranteed a spot in that session’s class. What are the etiquette rules during lane and open swim?

Lane Swim Etiquette

  1. All swimmers are required to take a shower before entering the pool.
  2. We do not require bathing caps, hair that is shoulder length or longer is required to be tied up or in a bathing cap.
  3. Members and their guests should read the pool rules posted in the area before entering the pool.
  4. “Stretching” should be done while standing on the pool deck prior to entering the pool.
  5. Before entering a specific lane, a swimmer should observe the performance level of the swimmers already in the water and then select an appropriate lane based on one’s own speed. Ask the lifeguard for assistance if you are unsure which lane would best suit your speed.
  6. Enter the water only when there is room in that lane that you have selected. Stand in the corner until the other swimmer(s) in the lane have an opportunity to see you. When there are two people in the lane, they may split the lane, swimming only on one side. Once a third person enters a lane, then “circle swimming” will have to be practiced. Circle swimming is when the occupants of a lane swim in a counter-clockwise direction. (Swim on the right side of the lane, like driving a car.)
  7. If there is a difference in speed in a lane with more than two swimmers and you need to pass, this should be done at the wall. This will avoid startling another swimmer or causing a collision.
  8. When there are more than two swimmers in a lane, it is necessary that all of the occupants swim continuously, unless the group agrees to swim the same “workout”. If you must stop swimming, stand in the corner of the lane so the other swimmers may safely turn at the wall.
  9. Please– no spitting into the gutter

Recreational Swim Etiquette

    1. No Running allowed.
    2. Inflatable devices are not allowed.
    3. Children under 7 or a non swimmer must have a parent within arm’s reach in the water.
    4. If a child would like to use the diving board, they need to demonstrate to the lifeguard that they are able to safely swim the entire length of the pool without a bubble or holding onto the wall.
    5. The lifeguard may ask for jumping to be from between the orange cones only.
    6. Starting blocks are allowed only during a class or swim team.
    7. Members may bring in toys for use with the lifeguards approval for safety.
    8. No diving in the shallow end of the pool.
